MEET AUSTEN
Representative Austen Schauer is a trusted public servant for West Fargo and District 13, known for steady leadership and a practical approach to solving problems.
Austen brings a lifetime of experience to his role. He spent 36 years as a television news anchor, earning the trust of North Dakotans through honest reporting and a deep understanding of the issues facing our communities. Today, he works as a Business Development Manager with ProSource’s professional recruiting team and has previously served as a Director of Community Relations and Development for Park Christian School.
Austen has also been deeply involved in the community, serving organizations that support families, veterans, and those in need. His service includes more than two decades on the Salvation Army Board, as well as leadership roles with the North Dakota Fisher House (helping raise $8 million), Families Flourish (formerly Prevent Child Abuse North Dakota), Feed My Starving Children (helping raise $3 million), and Centre Inc., which provides residential reentry support for individuals recovering from addiction. He is also an active member of Submerge Community Church.
Austen and his wife, Angie—a retired West Fargo teacher of 28 years—have proudly called West Fargo home for more than two decades and lived in Cass County since 1980. Their life has been built around service, community, and family. As a husband, father, and grandfather, Austen understands firsthand the importance of protecting the values that make North Dakota strong.

IMPACT & LEADERSHIP
Austen knows that decisions made in Bismarck directly impact families, businesses, and communities across our state. That’s why he works every day to deliver meaningful, responsible results.
In the Legislature, Austen serves in key leadership roles, including as Chairman of the House Government and Veterans Affairs Committee, member of the Industry, Business and Labor Committee, as a Former House Caucus Leader where he helped raise $80,000, and as Former Chair of the Employee Benefits Program. During the interim, he serves on the Employee Benefits Program Committee and Legislative Audit and Fiscal Review Committee.
Austen was recognized by the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber as an Exemplary Legislative Leader for his work during the 2025 Legislative Session to champion numerous priorities important to the region.
Working alongside Representative Jim Jonas and Senator Judy Lee, Austen helped deliver major conservative accomplishments this past session, including:
- Historic Property Tax Relief
Tripled the property tax credit—delivering up to $1,600 in relief—while capping local increases at 3% and putting property taxes on a path toward elimination - Smaller, More Efficient Government
Eliminated 16 boards and commissions, initiated a review of 150+ committees, and launched a task force to reduce wasteful spending - Stronger Education
Passed North Dakota’s landmark cell phone-free classroom law and strengthened parental involvement - Infrastructure Investments
Supported funding for roads, bridges, and critical infrastructure - Public Safety
Backed law enforcement and strengthened community safety - Economic Growth
Advanced policies that support businesses and create good-paying jobs - Support for Vulnerable Citizens
Advocated for protecting and assisting the elderly, disabled and unborn - Support of Veterans
Led the passage of 10 bills in the 2025 Session supporting veterans and their family including suicide prevention measures. - Advocate for Life
